From the monastery, built in the IX century, only two temples remain – Surb Arakelots (Temple of the Apostles) and Surb Astvatsatsin (Temple of the Virgin). The buildings of the churches were built of solid black tuff stones, hence, it is believed, the name of the monastery "Sevanavank" — "Black Monastery".The island (and now the peninsula) with the Black Monastery were repeatedly raided by the enemy: Arabs, hordes of Tamerlane, Persians, etc. Two black temples of Sevan stand deserted, like two guardians of this ancient lake. And in front of them stretches the blue of the sky /sea. The landscape around is fascinating: mountains surround the lake from all sides, snow-capped peaks can be seen disappearing over the horizon. I still don't understand how our leaders did it, but suddenly I started singing in silence, no! Duduk began to cry. Someone whispered: "This is Komitas, "Dle Yaman"... We, boys and girls from many corners of the Soviet Union, stood, thinking, listening to the Great Cry of the unfortunate genius composer. What was everyone thinking about? I don't know. Sevanavank is a complex of buildings of an ancient monastery located on the Sevan peninsula of the same name, which was previously a small island. The first churches of St. Karapet and St. Harutyun (Church of the Ascension) were built here in the IV century on the site of a pagan temple. At the end of the 8th century, several monks settled on the island of Sevan, who built their cells and chapel here. Due to the advantageous position of the island, their number increased, and the active construction of the monastery began. To build walls, a ledge was cut into the rock around the island, on which large stone blocks were laid. A wall encircled the island, and a watchtower with a gate was built above it. After that, the monks built three churches, cells and outbuildings. In the XVI-XVII centuries, the walls of the monastery were destroyed, and in 1930 the last monk left the island. Now the monastery has been reopened, with a theological seminary operating. Small three-apse cross-domed churches of St. Arakelots (874) and St. Karapet(305) have been preserved to this day. They offer a beautiful view of Lake Sevan stretching to the horizon.
