I entered the Summer Garden through the Neva gate late in the afternoon. The city had not fallen silent; it had merely turned its voice three centuries backward. Beyond the iron grille, every path seemed to carry the discipline of Peter the Great’s imagination: trees arranged like sentences, fountains returning water to the air, marble figures keeping watch over a state that once tried to design not only its capital, but its future. Yet perfection has never survived here without a wound. The fountains were broken by floods. A shot was fired at a tsar near the central gate. During the Siege of Leningrad, the statues were buried beneath sand so that war would not destroy their faces. Flowers gave way to vegetables, beauty to hunger, and still the garden endured. The figures standing among the trees today are copies; their originals are protected indoors. But I kept thinking that perhaps memory also survives through copies: a story repeated, a gesture inherited, a name spoken after the person who carried it is gone. Near Krylov’s monument, the bronze animals seemed ready to escape their fables. Somewhere farther along the path, I imagined a young Onegin walking beside his French tutor. Under the darkening sky, another bench belonged to Prince Myshkin, waiting beneath the pressure of an approaching storm. Raskolnikov, on his way toward murder, once dreamed of extending this garden so that beauty might occupy more of the city. Dostoevsky understood that order can appear most painfully to a mind standing at the edge of chaos. Then I remembered Akhmatova’s statues, capable of recognizing the woman she had once been. That may be the true nature of the Summer Garden: it remembers versions of us that we can no longer reach on our own. When I stepped outside, the Neva wind belonged to the present again. Still, something in me had grown heavier without being carried—the feeling that when strangers preserve beauty through flood, violence and hunger, we owe our own memories a little more care.

The most beautiful time to visit the summer garden is in autumn (in my opinion). No entrance fee. Allocate at least 1 hour to walk around. There are some beautiful white swans living in the pond at the entrance. I hope someone relocates them during winter

A quite and shady place is perfect for chilling and cooling off when it's hot and sunny in the city. 8/10 is def worth a visit 🤜🏻🤛🏻
