Vake Park (also known as Victory Park in Soviet times) is a picturesque place on the slope of the Trialeti Range in the central district of Tbilisi. It not only pleases the eye, but also keeps a lot of interesting stories. The construction of the park began in 1946: 200 hectares of forest were allocated for its creation. The project embodied the idea of a harmonious combination of nature and architecture — and decades later it is still felt when walking along shady alleys. What to see and where to walk: From the north, the park is connected to Chavchavadze Avenue by wide flights of stairs — a great place for photo shoots and a little warm-up before a walk. The main axis of the park is the central staircase that leads to a series of pools with cascading fountains. Behind them on the mountain is the Grave of the Unknown Soldier memorial, dedicated to the memory of hundreds of thousands of Georgian soldiers who served and died in the ranks of the Red Army during World War II: a wide staircase leads to it, and a panoramic view of Tbilisi opens from the site. The park's special charm is added by: * dense greenery — century-old trees, manicured shrubs and lawns create a sense of privacy, even though you are in the center of more than a million megacities (1.3 million people); * flowerpots with stucco molding in the Soviet neoclassical style; * openwork lanterns for outdoor lighting — they create a cozy atmosphere in the evening; * Red crumbs sprinkled on the footpaths — this unusual design element gives the park a recognizable look. Entertainment and infrastructure: There is something for everyone in Vake Park.: * A children's playground is a safe and vibrant space for games; * Open—air cinema - in summer, films in Georgian and Russian are shown here, and thematic film festivals are often held.; * cafes and restaurants with views of the park and the city — you can try Georgian cuisine or just drink coffee among the greenery; * In the southwest, the park ends at the Mikhail Meskhi Stadium. If you like sports, check the match schedule or just take a walk around the arena. Interesting facts: 1. Botanical collection. Rare species of trees grow in the park, including those brought from other climatic zones in the 1950s. Some specimens have been preserved since the foundation of the park and are now considered monuments of wildlife. 2. Fountains with a history. The cascades of fountains on the main axis were designed taking into account the natural relief — the water moves without pumps, due to the height difference (according to physical laws: gravity (gravity); the difference in hydrostatic pressure between the upper and lower levels; the principle of communicating vessels). This engineering solution has been working smoothly so far. 3. Cinema in the park. The open‑air cinema appeared in the 1970s and became one of the first in the USSR. Georgian films premiered here, and posters of those years have been preserved in the archives of local cinemas. 4. Cable car to Turtle Lake. The overhead line connecting the park with the lake was opened in the 1960s. This is one of the oldest cable cars in Tbilisi, and its cabins offer views of the city blocks and mountains. 5. Hiking trail. The trail from the park to Turtle Lake is part of an ancient route that was used by locals even before the creation of the park. Today it is a popular hiking route (hiking in nature for pleasure): The journey takes about 30-40 minutes and passes through a wooded area. 6. Memorial of Glory. The Grave of the Unknown Soldier memorial, crowning the park, was opened in 1981 to mark the 40th anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War. Its architectural ensemble includes: the Eternal Flame; sculpture of a rising woman with a banner and a branch; sculptures of fallen soldiers (created by Georgian sculptor Giorgi Ochiauri in 1981-1985). Veterans and residents of Tbilisi gather at the memorial every year on Victory Day (May 9). Foreign leaders lay wreaths here during their state visits. Vake Park is not just a green area, but a real open—air museum where nature, architecture and history are intertwined.
