The Dionysus Theatre is located on the south side of the Acropolis. This is the first theater in the world. The works of the great classical poets Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes were staged in this theater. The stands could accommodate 17,000 spectators. In the first rows there are 67 marble thrones of magnificent artistic execution for the priests and important people of the city. You can admire the sculptural decoration dedicated to the cult of Dionysus.
By the middle of the 6th century BC, a new poetic genre of drama was born in ancient Attica for the first time in the world. This is a dialogue of free thoughts. Dionysus is the god of vegetation, fertility, wine, intoxication and games that lead participants into a frenzy and rampage. The archaic songs that glorified Dionysus were gradually changing. Since the 5th century, these chants have formed the basis of tragedy, drama, and comedy, which drew inspiration from myths and historical events.
