Stunningly. A pure holy place. For believers. It requires reverence and respect. Everything is beautiful. You can drink water from the well. You can climb the stairs and sit on the tower and admire the views. You can play with the local very kind dogs.
The cathedral is amazing in its size, it is a pity that the frescoes and paintings have not been preserved.
The cathedral was built in the second half of the 10th century by Tsar Leon III. To this day, it remains the only five-relief cross-domed church in the country.
The cathedral was distinguished by its magnificent interior decoration. The frescoes, the marble iconostasis with columns, and the beautifully carved cornices were striking in their craftsmanship. A circle of red marble with a pattern of descending rays was laid out in the center of the floor ornament.
In the XVII century, the Turks seized Abkhazia and began to forcibly introduce Islam. The Mokva temple was looted and over time it began to collapse. In the fifties of the XIX century, the cathedral was repaired, the floor was paved with lime slabs, the carved cornices were dismantled, the hewn slabs of the walls were plastered, the paintings and mosaics in the altar were whitewashed. And the cathedral has forever lost its unique, exquisite image.
The cathedral turned into the tomb of Prince Mikhail Shervashidze of Abkhazia, his son George, as well as some Abkhazian military leaders. And in 1902, a convent was founded within the walls of the cathedral.
And just 18 years later, in 1920, the cathedral was looted again. Under Soviet rule, it remains closed.
As a gift for the 1000th anniversary, the cathedral was partially restored in 1968. The last damage was caused by the Abkhaz-Georgian war.
In 2002, the Mokva Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was officially reopened to parishioners.
It's a great place. Very unusual. The temple looks like a medieval castle. Very unusual architecture. You definitely need to visit. There is a tree in the yard in the shade of which there is a swing. Excellent energy
The most magical place on Earth! What kind of mothers work here! Icons and prayers from all over the Abkhazian Land - you will not find them anywhere! I come here specially every summer! Amulets, icons, bracelets, rosaries and other products purchased here have a very powerful protective effect! It has been tested on myself for 4 years already! I have already bought charms for all my friends, made by kind and bright people living in the Holy Land!
A very pleasant place. The energy is wonderful. The view is beautiful, especially when viewed from the observation tower. Delicious water in the well.
Among the disadvantages: the condition of icons and images, many are printed on paper.
There is no interior decoration. To my taste, it adds authenticity to the temple.
A slightly timid cow almost knocked the girl down.
This wonderful temple gives children! Dozens of families have finally found happiness! Do not forget dog and cat food (there are many of them) and you will be rewarded from this holy place!
One of the most beautiful and with a difficult fate is the Mokva Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The ancient Christian sanctuary was built in the 960-970s by the Abkhazian king Leon III in the village of Mokva (Myku, Mokvi), in the Ochamchira district. At one time, the temple was a significant building, which was the center of the religious life of the Abkhazians. This is a unique five-relief cross-domed cathedral in Abkhazia. It is operational, but it is being destroyed, requires restoration and repair. Once the temple was magnificently decorated from the inside, the vaults and walls were covered with elaborate fresco paintings, mosaics, the altar was separated by a marble iconostasis with columns, the floor was decorated with ornaments. Outside, the architectural structure was decorated with all kinds of carved stone cornices. The temple has existed for many centuries as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Abzhui. The Turks plundered it several times during the invasions. After the destruction and subsequent restoration work, the structure has survived to the present day in relatively good condition, all the main elements are intact, but already represented in the design of the XIX century. Now the interior and decoration of the temple are quite simple, it is difficult to make out the few remaining faces of saints on the walls. However, this bright, atmospheric place has simply amazing energy.
The Mokva Temple is a place of power. I will be happy to come next time. Silence and tranquility and the unusual beauty of the temple and the mountains
A holy place, everything is based on trust, the goddess will tell you if you have any questions, the room of the Virgin is a mysterious place, you can write your petition and it will definitely come true. I really want the local government to start the restoration .
A very beautiful view opens from the bell tower, there is a well with water, it is also very beautiful inside, there are many icons, you can climb to the second floor.
Something fantastic, location, nature, the building itself, monumental. Restoration, the design is simple. The building is huge, built in the 10th century. The question is how? How can you gather such power and beauty in the mountains at the same time. Under the impression for a month already!
A very beautiful ancient cathedral! It looks amazing against the background of white mountain caps! A large area. Unfortunately, the temple was closed. They didn't get inside. Hopefully next time.
A quiet and cozy place where the soul sings. It is very cozy, where it is easy to breathe, there are few tourists, there is an opportunity to be alone with yourself. When I stood near the icons of Matrona of Moscow, there was an open window above, birds were singing, I closed my eyes and wanted to stand like this forever, an amazing feeling. You can go up to the second floor, to the dilapidated bell tower. There is a 200-year-old bronze mug next to the well. The cathedral is located against the backdrop of stunning nature, breathtaking from antiquity and beauty. I advise you to visit.
An Ancient Orthodox Church. A beautiful picturesque place. The temple is old, but active. You can go up to the balcony and see old ancient frescoes on some walls. The temple is very interesting both in architecture and location. Since it is located far away in the mountains, there are few tourists there. Quiet, calm and cozy. The road to Mokva has finally been made and you can get there by car without worrying about the suspension.
The Mokva Cathedral was once the center of religious life in Abkhazia. The cathedral was built in the second half of the X century by Tsar Leon III.-3-3. 59. That's something!!! I really liked it! Such beauty is untouched.... concrete seems to be, but ... the temple has not been destroyed for 10 centuries, it has been preserved. I really liked the sermon of the priest- simply and clearly, as in terms of concepts)). The atmosphere cannot be conveyed. The child confessed and received communion. Confession in the cell of the Virgin, where they say she prayed. There is a well on the street, which is more than 200 years old with a copper bowl and frescoes. After the service, the priest invited all the parishioners outside for a morning meal. So all this is not usual for residents of big cities... Whoever gets to this region of Abkhazia must be Orthodox to visit! Rate it.
The Orthodox Church of the X-th century. There was no service on the day of our arrival, but the church was working, candles were put on, and notes about health and nominations were left. A salted place. Thank you for saving it.
The temple is stunning, located like the main temples of Abkhazia in a stunningly beautiful place, details of ancient frescoes have been preserved. A must-visit for those who want to touch the history
Good time of day! I don't even know how to evaluate this place... It's not a bar, it's a church. Therefore, I think it is not appropriate... We were in Abkhazia. We stopped by this place. Very beautiful. For the untrained, there is everything you need. Shawls for the head, capes for the feet.. I don't know what they are exactly called, quarrel. The male sex in shorts should also cover their legs! I didn't know about it, so I didn't put it on. Then the employee ran after me with this cape.. It was very awkward. Soooo. I am not a believer, but I really love everything ancient. It was very interesting. The murals on the walls, the icons are old. Even bats were seen on the second floor)) The building is very old, the walls are thick. The architecture is fascinating. The most important thing when you go there is not to forget about pigs on the roads and cows))
An interesting temple, it is clear that they take care of it, you can go up to the second floor, let them into the bell tower next to the temple. The unique icons on the iconostasis, it is a pity that they are being destroyed. There is a well with delicious water and a 200-year-old mug on the territory
It's impressive when you realize how old he is... Of course, it would be ideal to repair it at all (but, unfortunately, this can be said about 80% of the entire Abkhazia).
Colossal energy!!! High vibrations, already "rocking" - if you know what I mean.
Every time we visit Abkhazia, we definitely stop by to pray and put candles on. To all kind people and sincere believers, I definitely RECOMMEND to visit here! And those who do not have such an opportunity, watch the video on our channel.
An amazing place, an amazing temple was here for evening service and Liturgy, rare icons liked everything Here, I will definitely come here when I am in Abkhazia, I recommend it to everyone
