Burg Wertheim, also known as Wertheim Castle, is the majestic ruins of a medieval castle towering over the ancient town of the same name in Baden-Württember. The castle has a long and rich history, which can be traced back to the 12th century. Foundation and heyday (12th – 15th centuries): The castle was built as the ancestral home of the Counts of Wertheim. Its strategic location on a high mountain above the confluence of the Tauber and Main rivers was ideal for controlling important trade routes and collecting customs duties. The first mentions date back to 1183. Over the centuries, the castle was constantly being built and strengthened, reflecting the growing influence and wealth of the count's family. Destruction (17th century): Like many castles in Germany, Burg Wertheim did not survive the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). In 1634, it was captured and heavily damaged by Imperial troops. The final blow to it was inflicted by the War of the Palatinate succession at the end of the 17th century, when the troops of the French king Louis XIV blew up part of the fortifications. Since then, the castle has remained in ruins. The era of Romanticism and restoration (XIX – XX centuries) In the XIX century, the ruins of the castle, like many others, attracted the attention of romantics who admired its picturesque appearance. The first conservation and partial restoration work was carried out to stop further destruction and make the site safe to visit. Today, the castle is under state protection.
