Museums in Georgia are overpriced and I always get out of them very disappointed. The National Gallery of Georgia develops over two levels and, while one might still find it interesting to have a look, it is really difficult to understand how can such a lively country with sunny landscapes, good food and nice people, can produce this art which is made mainly of grotesque figures, or depressive portraits of the city or the people.

Lovely spacious building and atmosphere. At this time of year the exhibition hall is full of paintings and sculptures. Currently, Guram Gelovani and Ekaterine Gelovani as well as the two famous artists of Georgia, Pirosmani and Shervashidze, are represented. All are superb artists. There’s a small gift shop and cafe. The art is simply wonderful. The management and staff of this museum, however is shameful ! It’s the worst I’ve seen in Tbilisi or anywhere in the world. The women at reception desk looked down when i came in, and blatantly ignored me. They probably hoped i would just go away. No one could help me because i asked for an english speaker. Finally, someone was called and came to the reception desk to take my admissions money. The poor service of the staff continued throughout the museum, and the attitude baffled and shocked me. The paintings are largely unprotected and no one on staff was watching them, The employees, almost all women, were chatting loudly in the museum lobby during most of my visit of two+ hours. No one was doing much of anything, The two male employees (Security? Custodial? ) were on the cafe terrace enjoying the view. Opportunities exist for museum workers to be trained in spesking about the art and providing collection information, and performing other important customer service functions. No museum brochure was given. Apparently the management at National Gallery is satisfied with an incredible level of disregard, boredom and unprofessinalism in its employees. The only exception was the art student in the gift shop, she was proactive and friendly. The museum is a pleasant place to spend an afternoon, with a/c and good information in the galleries that is printed in Georgian and English. In spite of the uncommonly rude and uncaring staff, it is definitely worth a visit.

We were in the gallery at an exhibition of paintings by Niko Pirosmani. Now this is the main place where his paintings are displayed, as the Pirosmani Museum is closed for reconstruction. An organizational disadvantage is the lack of information about exhibitions on the Internet and on the gallery's website. It's also impossible to get through to phone numbers. But there are very helpful staff who will explain everything, show you and help you when visiting the gallery.
