The Azarichi concentration camp, which served as a living shield for the retreat of the German army, housed more than 50,000 people, mostly the elderly, pregnant women, and children. More than 15,000 people died there during their stay. The concentration camp was located in a swampy area, under the open sky. The leadership of the German army developed an insidious plan to infect the Soviet army by infecting peaceful captive people with typhus. The Ninth German Army successfully carried it out, which is documented. Liberator soldiers, military doctors, became infected and died. The deliberate extermination of the civilian population by the Nazis using bacteriological weapons was proved at the Nuremberg trials.
