The castle is the symbol structure of Oltu district. It dominates the entire district. The restoration is self-evident. I don't know why, but it's also closed for visits. Its history is as follows: M. D. 4. Oltu Castle, which was built by the Urartians in the century, is one of the historical monuments worth visiting located in the Oltu district of Erzurum. The outer walls of the castle, located in the district center of Oltu, on the hill on the banks of the Oltu Stream, surrounded the neighborhoods of Oltu in the past, but unfortunately they have not reached the present day. But the inner castle, on the natural cliffs, amazes with its solidity and all its splendor. The inner castle, the perimeter of which is reinforced with high and thick rampart walls and bastions, is also called "Ehmedek". There are many cisterns, a mausoleum, a chapel and places belonging to the castle guards on the inner castle. The bastion and border walls in the northwest of Oltu Castle had a very imposing feature in the past. The Seljuk Bath, located at the eastern foot of the inner castle, the original of which dates back to the Seljuks and is connected to the inner castle by means of künks, has formed an integrity with the Oltu Castle. There is also a secret waterway that descends from Ehmedek to Oltu Creek. Oltu Castle, which is built on an area of 3000 m2, was used as a caravanserai for a while during the Ottoman period at the same time. The castle, built of cut stone, has undergone many repairs from the Byzantine, Seljuk, Akkoyunlu, Karakoyunlu and Ottoman periods. The last restoration was carried out in 1998-1999 and the castle was strengthened. On the steep and high bastion at the northeast corner of the inner castle, there is a chapel with a six-leaf clover plan, which has remained at the foundation level. 10-11. For centuries, block stones with profiled, decorated in places were used at the basic level of the chapel, which was built by the Georgians who had the dominance in the region. The chapel, which attracts attention with its sundial motif, has an entrance from the west and an apse roundel in the east direction.
