The views from the fortress are very beautiful, especially in summer. Looking at the green carpet of forests and mountains, one gets the impression of an undulating sea frozen in an instant. The fortress itself is so ancient that only hints of its former greatness and importance remain. And the affordable bus ride from the city makes the place very popular. What I highly recommend is to take a walking route from Azeula to Asureti. On the way, you can meet high waterfalls and visit 14th-century churches.

It's a great place. There is almost nothing left of the fortress, but you can climb the stairs and enjoy the magnificent views. Someone is climbing the wall, but it doesn't look safe.

Azeula is a fortress, also known as Kojor fortress, Agarani fortress or Kojris-tsikhe. The exact date of the fortress's construction is unknown, but according to archaeologists, it could have been built in the late 8th — early 9th century. The fortress was built to control the caravan routes from Tbilisi to Trialeti and from Gardabani to Shida Kartli. During its existence, the fortress changed several names and owners: in 1080, the Seljuk Turks captured the fortress and gave it the name Ker Oglu; Later it passed into the possession of Emir Faldun, and in 1118 it was recaptured by the Georgian ruler David IV Agmashenebeli. (By David the Builder); David the Builder handed over the fortress to Prince Ioana Orbeli, who is considered the ancestor of the Orbeliani family in Georgia.; In 1177, Orbeliani's descendants rebelled against Tsar George III, but the rebellion was suppressed, and the fortress was again taken over by the tsar.; Tsarina Tamara used the fortress as her residence; at the end of her life, being ill, she spent about six months in it.; Since the 15th century, the fortress belonged to the Solagashvili family and appeared in sources as Kojris-tsikhe. In 1488, Iranian troops besieged the Kojor fortress. In the 17th century, a royal palace appeared next to the fortress, but nothing remained of it. Another episode in the history of the fortress is connected with the Battle for Tbilisi in 1921, when Georgian troops repelled the attacks of the Red Army. To date, most of the ruins of the fortress have remained: some arches, remnants of gates and low stone remains at the level of the original foundations have been preserved. To get inside the citadel, you need to walk along a narrow path between two huge boulders, and then climb a metal staircase that goes up at a decent slope. The fortress is located on the top of Mount Azeula (hence its alternative name) at an altitude of 1,340 meters. Its walls offer 360—degree panoramic views of the surrounding area. In clear weather, the Caucasus mountain range, Armenia, and Azerbaijan are visible.
