Schloss Montabaur is not just an ancient building, but a true symbol of the German city of Montabaur in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its bright yellow color and picturesque location on a hill (321 meters above sea level) make it visible from afar, and its walls preserve more than a thousand years of history. Here are the main milestones of this long journey: · X–XI centuries. (The Middle Ages): The Castellum Humbacense fortification was located on this site. In 959, it was first mentioned as the residence of the Duke of Swabia, and in 1018 it became the property of the Electorate of Trier. · 1217 (New name): After the destruction in 1212, the Archbishop of Trier rebuilt the castle and named the hill Mons Tabor (after the biblical Mount Tabor). The modern name Montabaur is derived from this name. · 1520 (Renaissance): The castle turns from a medieval fortress into a four-winged Renaissance-style palace, as we see it today. · 1687-1709 (Golden Age): Under Elector Johann Hugo von Orsbeck, the castle acquired its magnificent Baroque appearance and famous wall paintings. · Modernity: Today the castle belongs to the Academy of German Cooperatives (ADG). It serves as a conference center and a four-star hotel. Architecturally, the building is a two-storey complex with four wings forming an almost square courtyard. The corners of the building are crowned by three powerful round towers with characteristic "bulbous" domes, and the 33-meter-high medieval bergfried (the main keep tower) towers over the entire complex. The modern appearance of the castle is the result of centuries of evolution: · Medieval foundation: A powerful bergfried with a height of 33 meters. Renaissance: The four-winged structure of the main building, formed around 1520. · Baroque (1687-1709): The famous yellow color of facades, elegant staircase towers and interiors, including ceiling paintings by Lazaro Maria Sanguinetti, which allegorically depicts light and the four elements. Over the centuries, the castle has managed to play different roles. Until the end of the 18th century, it served as the residence of the electors of Trier, and later became the hunting castle of the Dukes of Nassau. In the 19th century, it housed a teachers' seminary and the office of the district administrator.
