For those who are interested in medieval history and architecture and are located within a radius of about 70-80 km from Altena, I think it is worth visiting this castle. Yes, by the standards of medieval fortresses, it does not look huge. I would rather call it a well-fortified castle than a grandiose fortress, although I am not an expert in classification issues. But the place is well preserved and today it has been turned into a museum where you can get acquainted with the life and history of the Middle Ages. Inside, you can see restored living spaces, bedrooms with historic beds, an antique dining room with furniture and a large fireplace, as well as exhibitions dedicated to crafts and metal production in the region. It is especially interesting that many of the rooms are decorated in such a way as to show the daily life of people of that time, and not just the military history of the castle. I'll mention the castle tower separately. It offers good views of the city below, the valley and the surrounding mountains. Nothing supernatural, but it's definitely worth going up. There is a small restaurant on site. The prices are not budget-friendly, but they are quite expected for a tourist destination. There is parking near the castle, but I would recommend leaving the car down in the city and walking up the paths and streets leading to the castle. Along the way, you can see old houses and feel the atmosphere of a small German town, which also adds to the experience of visiting. After exploring the castle, you can stroll around the surroundings or look into the forest on the neighboring slope. Of course, this is not an attraction worth traveling across Germany for, but if you are nearby, interested in history and want to spend a few hours pleasantly, then it is definitely worth coming here. If you rate it on a five–point scale, then for me it's a solid 4.1-4.3 stars out of 5.
