It was pleasant and a little surprising to be at this monument in Vitebsk. This is a five-meter bronze figure on a granite pedestal, one of the most famous monuments to the Patriarch, installed near the walls of the Holy Dormition Cathedral. The installation site was not chosen by chance - it reflects the Patriarch's deep connection with this temple: in 1998, Alexy II visited Vitebsk and personally laid the capsule in the foundation of the future Assumption Cathedral, which was blown up in 1936. And until the end of his life, the Patriarch was interested in the progress of the restoration of the cathedral and gave his blessing to the builders. The grand opening took place on April 7, 2013, on the feast of the Annunciation. On the opening day, the tradition of releasing white doves at the Annunciation was revived - symbols of peace and the soul's desire for heaven. Looking at this majestic monument near the walls of the restored Assumption Cathedral, one is especially acutely aware of how reverently and gratefully the Belarusian people treat their spiritual pastor. For the residents of Vitebsk and the whole of Belarus, this monument is not just a tribute to the church hierarch, but a symbol of the inseparable connection of time, a sign of deep appreciation for his titanic work to restore the ruined shrines. Here, in the ancient land, it is felt that Patriarch Alexy II is remembered and revered as his own father, who blessed the rebirth of the cathedral from the ruins and forever remained in the hearts of people with his humble service, wisdom and sincere love for the flock. The monument has become not just an ornament of the city, but a real national place of worship, where everyone can touch the memory of the holy elder, who is sincerely called "our batsushka" here.
