"The scariest thing about the zone," recall the liquidators of the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, "is the abandoned, empty cities. It felt like you were in a fantasy movie. Silence, and only the linen on the balcony is swaying, the clothespins are creaking." People were leaving in a hurry, leaving unmade beds in their homes, and plates of half-eaten breakfast on the tables. Everyone seems to have left for a minute and is about to return... Feral cats and dogs roamed the streets of the city, because pets were also not allowed. "They didn't feel the radiation, they were just afraid of something dangerous and unknown," the liquidation participants say. Most of them felt the effects of radiation a little later, upon returning home. The Chernobyl tragedy affected millions of our fellow citizens (then still in the USSR). Its scale would have been much greater if it had not been for the selfless work and courage of hundreds of thousands of people of various professions and nationalities. Risking their own lives, they resisted the radiation elements, not thinking about themselves, fulfilling their civic duty. Over 600,000 "liquidators" worked in Chernobyl. I bow low to you, the survivors. To the dead – a bright memory and a low bow.
