Not far from Baku there is an unusual mountain, which is sure to be visited by tourists visiting the capital of Azerbaijan. And some travelers from Iran and India go to Azerbaijan solely for the sake of visiting this place. This mountain is called Yanardag, which means "burning mountain". The mountain is really burning, with a real fire.
Yanardag is a fiery miracle of nature in Azerbaijan
The thing is that there is a large hydrocarbon deposit on the territory of the Absheron Peninsula, on which the city of Baku and its surroundings are located. Natural gas located in the depths of Yanardag Mountain found its way out, where it ignited. This mountain is rather a hill, with a height of just over 100 meters. And the ignition of natural gas did not happen ten, not a hundred, or even five hundred years ago. As the legend says, the fire has been burning here for thousands of years.
The complex is built around a hill located at the top of the gas pocket, so the flame burns here all the time. The complex is located 15-17 km from Baku, accessible by public transport. It takes 15-20 minutes to visit. There are souvenir shops and a museum.
