The monument was erected within the framework of the "Alley of Russian Glory" project in honor of Soviet soldiers-prisoners of war who escaped on February 8, 1945 from a secret German island on which the new V-2 missile weapon was tested at that time. One of these soldiers, Nikolai Urbanovich, is a native of Shakhtersk.
