There are a lot of beautiful historical places with a rich history in Abkhazia, abandoned buildings (rest houses, sanatorium, former research institutes) built during the Soviet period. I will briefly describe one of the oldest sights of Abkhazia on my last visit in October this year.
An ancient fortification has been preserved on the Iverskaya Mountain, in New Athos. You can climb up to this citadel along the serpentine winding path. After driving up to the car and on the site, leaving it, buying tickets and paying for the parking of the car , we went up to the citadel of the Anakopian fortress.
It was a hot day, October 10 +25 °, rising, along the way we photographed beautiful views, nature, growing exuberantly in a subtropical climate. I took a shortcut part of the way....A smart guy will get around the mountain, huh..... it will cut directly. Which I did. At the top, the fortification is striking in its magnitude❗It was built somewhere in the 5th- 7th centuries on the slope of the Iverskaya mountain, south of the republic, and was considered a reliable fortress against enemy invasions. Much later, the parish of the Blessed Virgin Mary was organized here and Athos monks lived. The height above sea level is 350 m. Currently, it is an archaeological ensemble of 13 sites including : ruins of walls and defensive preserved lines. In 2008, the eastern tower was reconstructed , which can be climbed and a wonderful view opens in front of your eyes. ➖ In the distance, a ridge of mountains, the sea, New Athos. ❗The very construction of the fortification line, the tower, the citadel and the views before your eyes are impressive. This beauty is mesmerizing ❗
Observation tower, 360° view around
You can climb along a dirt road, or you can take a short cut along the paths uphill. But you need to go down them carefully, it's easy to get up from there.
There is an inexhaustible well next to the tower, take a bottle of water with you. And there is also an open-air church there, you can put candles.
The Gate Tower is a historical monument that preserves a centuries—old history. Even at the sight of it, you can imagine what kind of atmosphere the interior of the fortress is filled with.
