The border of the state runs along part of the perimeter of the square. To enter St. Peter's Cathedral, you need to go through the security service metal detectors on the right. The queues are long. Swiss guards guard the passage on the left side of the cathedral. You can take pictures of them from afar, but you can't get close. The regime was tightened, I think, after the events in Angels and Demons.)
