It's a beautiful place. When I come to New Athos, I often walk there. There are very beautiful views. You can go up the car road that leads to the monastery and down the pedestrian road. And then you get to the historical center to the waterfalls. There is also one of Stalin's dachas near the monastery and you can walk there. The road is good for a walk.
A very interesting place, we visited in July 2024, came ourselves without an excursion, were able to visit only one temple, put candles, and ordered a prayer service for the health and the dead. There is a beautiful view of the sea and New Athos.
Abkhazia, New Athos is a place of power! Both body and soul are resting there! A heavenly place! The absolute harmony of man with nature! Very fascinatingly beautiful places!
Very atmospheric place! Stunning murals inside, majestic silhouettes of domes outside. I want to stay here longer, enjoy the peace and quiet. Magnificent pitchfork on the surrounding area.
I liked this place. We went to Abkhazia for one day. We took a catamaran ride on Lake Rizza. Then we went to New Athos. The monastery is impressive, you can put candles. At the entrance, they give out capes so that men's knees are covered and women wear skirts. Of course, restoration is needed to preserve it for posterity. The building is large, repairs are very necessary in the backyard. I bought mountain honey at the market there, I recommend it. If you go to Abkhazia for a few days, be sure to visit. And we didn't have time to visit Petsunda.
From the beauty side. Don't get up any more. In poor condition without proper care. The cracks and the paint are all faded. I won't go there a second time
We've been here a few times. This summer we decided to take a walk and sat in the monastery. Its own atmosphere. Beautiful from the inside, ancient frescoes, services. Visit, you will not regret, the impression will remain, I promise
Great view! It's not usual inside either. I just don't understand when something will be restored. We've been driving for many years and it's the same thing every year. But in general I recommend it. Photos and impressions of shikardos!
One of the iconic places of Abkhazia is the monastery in New Athos. When you look at him from afar, you already feel awe and excitement. The monastery is located on the mountain. The view is simply magnificent! And the church is just a miracle! What a painting! What domes! It's just breathtaking! Let's hope that the monastery will be revived, as in the old days, and the church will be restored.
The majestic monastery, inside the main temple, the painting requires restoration, but the power and splendor overshadows all the quibbles. There is also a beautiful park on the territory and a view of the city from a hill.
A very beautiful place, a gorgeous view of the sea and nature. Near the laurel and olive gardens. If you go on your own, then put on your sneakers, because the road goes uphill. I was disappointed by the terrible attitude of the authorities towards such a beautiful place, paint is falling off the walls, some are slightly destroyed. It is a pity that such a place remains in a deplorable state.
The seaside park and the embankment have left unforgettable impressions in our hearts. What else do you need for a good rest? The sea, the mountains and the gorgeous virgin nature.
I think comments are unnecessary here. A very holy place. Here you want to stop and think about life, about your actions. Beautiful and solemn. I really like.
The powerful energy of the place, monks are not to be seen, there are no monks along the way, services are rare, there are many tourists, so you can choose the time and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of spirituality.
Very beautiful, worth a visit. The atmosphere is soothing to the soul .The monastery includes 6 temples and cathedrals.there is a park nearby, it offers a great view of the sea.I advise you to visit.
Holy places (temples, monasteries, churches, synagogues, mosques, etc.) are always beautiful. Inside is a unique painting of saints. It's a pity you can't go up to the top level
It is very beautiful, the room is luxurious. The view of the sea is beautiful.....but it smells of desolation. They are not being restored, the windows in the residential part of the monastery are broken, it is depressing!
When there was an Orthodox church, I wanted to visit it again and again, there was a powerful spiritual energy of Orthodoxy. And now it's like a historical object, just to see....
It seems that the Metropolis is making every effort to revive the monasteries and temples of the republic, and this is noticeable.
I am surprised by only one thing: in the church shop of the New Athos Monastery, virtually all products (with the exception, probably, of refrigerator magnets) are manufactured and supplied by Sofrino Trading House, St. Petersburg. Is there really no way to make both objects for service and souvenirs on the spot? All visitors want to take away something memorable, but local.
Since 2011, the Russian Orthodox Church HAS NOT BLESSED Orthodox pilgrims to participate in the sacraments on the territory of the monastery, buy candles, souvenirs, and make donations.
The New Athos Monastery ended up in the hands of persons who dissolved their unity with the Russian Orthodox Church.
Hieromonks Dorotheus (Dbar) and Andrei (Ampar) were BANNED from the sacred ministry for their schismatic activities.
The idea of establishing a monastic brotherhood in Transcaucasia belongs to the monks of the Russian Panteleimon Monastery on Old Athos in Greece.
They implemented their idea with the help of Grand Duke Mikhail Nikolaevich Romanov, governor of the Caucasus. It was he who ordered the allocation of land in the Sukhumi district for the estate and grounds of the New Athos Monastery.
The choice of the site for the monastery was determined by the fact that the ancient temple of the Apostle Simon the Canaanite was located nearby, where, according to legend, his holy relics are located.
And also, not far from the temple, there is a cave in which, according to legend, the Saint retired and prayed.
On November 27, 1875, Emperor Alexander III handed over the temple of Simon the Canaanite to the New Athos Monastery, timed to coincide with the start of construction of the monastery.
Construction began under the guidance of Hieromonk Hieron, who is familiar with engineering and architecture.
But for the construction of the Cathedral of Panteleimon the Healer, Emperor Alexander III
appointed
architect Nikonov N.N.
According to his project, the cathedral was erected
by Russian monks in 12 years.
The Emperor personally participated in laying the first stone in the construction of the Cathedral of Panteleimon the Healer.
In honor of this event, a commemorative plaque was made, which is still on the wall of the Cathedral today.
As gifts, the emperor
presented to the monastery:
- musical chimes for the bell tower in the center of the western building,
- steam locomotive for the monastery railway ,
- diesel engine for the power plant.
On September 24 (October 6), 1888, at 11:00 a.m., the bell of the Intercession Church announced the arrival of Emperor Alexander III and his family, on the cruiser Moscow, accompanied by the clipper ship Memory of Mercury.
The tsar arrived in New Athos to participate in the laying of the foundation stone of the Cathedral of Panteleimon the Healer.
Abbot Hieron and Hieromonk Raphael met the royal family on the monastery boat.
The servants of the New Athos Monastery were preparing with great zeal for the arrival of the emperor.
For his visit, they built a bridge over the Psyrdzha River, and a Triumphal Arch of laurel was built next to the monastery gate. An icon of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos towered over the gate.
The royal family preferred to walk everywhere. They stayed in New Athos almost all day.
At 23:00 hours, accompanied by a military squadron consisting of armored ships
"Catherine II", "Chesna", four gunboats, the cruiser "Moscow" headed for Batumi.
In memory of this visit, the monks erected the Chapel of Our Lady of Iver on the seashore (in 2000 it was re-consecrated in honor of Alexander Nevsky), installed a memorial plaque at the waterfall and planted cypresses along the entire path of the royal family.
Part of this path is currently called "Tsarskaya Alley".
Currently, there is no monastic brotherhood in the monastery, services are held only once a week.
Several people, including tourists, come to the church, which can accommodate up to 3 thousand parishioners
.
During the tourist season, more than 200 buses arrive on the tour per day.
The temple is not consciously repaired, because tourists donate more for repairs.
Abkhazia, take care of the preservation of this treasure in New Athos! It is sad to see the shabby walls of the holy building. Thank you, Merciful Lord, for the opportunity to visit the holy walls prayed by those who come here from all over the world...
The monastery is very beautiful, with gorgeous frescoes and stained glass windows inside, but all the buildings are shabby and require good restoration repairs.
Atmospheric, but dark, unkempt. There are tents with candles on the street. At the entrance, a man, an attendant, probably tells you how to dress appropriately (cover your bare knees, head), which is very cool.
A holy place, Abbot Dorofey is a man from God, no other way, for our family this is the place where he baptized our daughter, now we will try to come to him every year for communion
A beautiful place where you can escape from the daily hustle and bustle, think and be alone with yourself, buy candles, icons (there is payment via the terminal)
A truly holy place, a functioning monastery and an ancient church. It's worth getting into the service, it's impressive. There is no point in going down to the waterfall, stay on the territory
