Judging by the area it covers, if it had remained intact, it would have been a structure as big as a cathedral.
"At the end of the 1000th year of Milad, it was during the reign of Emperor Basil that King Gagik of Armenia found himself eager to build a similar one in terms of size and plan of the large Vagarchapat church dedicated to Saint Krikor, which was ruined at that time, in the city of Ani."
- Stefanos Asogik of Taron
it is thought that Gagik, who ruled between 99 Dec and 1020 Dec, chose the architect Trdat, who designed the Ani Cathedral, to build the "millennium" church, and the church was probably built between 1001 and 1005, and according to other sources between 990 and 1000.
The above-mentioned church of Vagharchapat, erected between 642 and 662, destroyed by an earthquake in the 10th century Dec, is the most glorious architectural structure of the early periods of medieval Armenia, the magnificent Zvart'nots Cathedral. Zvart'nots was built on the place supposed to be the meeting place of the king of Armenia Trdat and Saint Krikor Lusavoric (Saint Gregory the Illuminator), as narrated by the historian Agathangelos in the narration of Armenia's acceptance of Christianity in the 4th century. According to tradition, this place was also built to preserve the relics of the saint.
