One of the greatest historical complexes in Uzbekistan. The complex was build around the mausoleum of the first arab adminstrator in the region. It is of religious and architectural importance.
It is definitely worth a visit. To touch the centuries-old history and distinctive architecture of Central Asia. And the colorful passages between the mausoleums are a great place for photos (if you can find a gap between the waves of tourists).
Ticket 65,000 soums (October 2024)
You can get there on foot (15 minutes from the city center), or by bus (№№ 12, 22, 30, 60, 66, 71, 93, 99, 256, M16), the schedule and route of buses from different parts of the city are detailed on Yandex maps or 2Gis.
Shahi Zinda ("the living king") is an ensemble of mausoleums with a 25-century history. A stone staircase leads to the tombs, and to find out how sinful you are, you need to count the steps on the way up, and a second time, going back down. If the number matches, there is a chance to go to heaven.
The complex of 11 mausoleums was supplemented with new buildings until the 19th century. The king means Qusam ibn Abbas, the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad. Above the entrance there is a panel with the inscription: "The prophet said ... that Al-Qusam ibn al-Abbas is more like me in appearance and character than all people."
Very beautiful. I watched it both in the afternoon and in the evening. I recommend to inspect it in the evening. All the ornaments look much brighter and more interesting and it is easier to breathe in the evening. The backlight is detailed and well thought out. In the evening, the whole ensemble is more impressive.
The most accurate impression that Shahi Zinda leaves is the atmosphere of peace and tranquility that can be felt here. Here you can escape from the hustle and bustle of the modern world and enjoy solitude and a meditative environment. We walked late in the evening, there were no people, a beautiful backdrop and immersion in the mysticism of the place.
Shahi Zinda in Samarkand is a place that simply amazes with its beauty and history. Visiting this unique architectural complex was an unforgettable experience for me. The charm of ancient buildings, frescoes and mosaics, as well as the atmosphere of antiquity and grandeur, permeates every corner of this place.
A walk along Shahi Zinda seems to take you into another era, when the majestic Islamic world reigned here. Narrow streets, ancient mausoleums and mosques, all this creates a unique atmosphere and impression.
I recommend visiting Shahi Zinda to all connoisseurs of history, culture and those who want to immerse themselves in the wonderful world of ancient times. This place is definitely worth a visit to experience the greatness of Samarkand's unique heritage.
It is a very beautiful complex. Beautiful mosaics on the walls. There you can walk for a long time, look at the intricate patterns of tiles on different mausoleums inside and outside. We were also told about the opportunity to make a wish (to do this, make a wish at the bottom and then count them while climbing the big steps. After walking through the territory, when you go down, you need to count the steps again and if the number matches, then the wish will come true. As strange as it may sound, not everyone has the same number of steps). I was glad that there was no market inside the territory with clothes and souvenirs, as in other places where we visited.
Like all historical sites and the main attractions of Samarkand, it impresses with its beauty and architecture. There are a lot of tourists, but beautiful photos can be made. It's probably better to visit this place early in the morning or late in the evening! You can take a guide on the spot.
A very atmospheric place , very beautiful, beautiful mosaics ,different mausoleums do not look like each other .It is worth taking the time and taking a quiet walk, looking at the ornaments .I recommend you to visit.
The architecture is incredible. Stylish, beautiful, gorgeous, amazing. It is impossible not to love Samarkand.
Thank you, Uzbekistanis, for preserving and caring for memory.
It's a cool place. As soon as you enter, you immediately get into that era. Strong energy is felt. There is a neat mosque at the entrance. Cleanliness is the same as in all the places of interest in Samarkand.
One of the most beautiful places in Samarkand. If you do not have time, it is better to go to it than to two or three other attractions, you will be amazed. In my opinion, it is even more interesting than the madrasah on Registan Square.
In my opinion, this is the most amazing place in Samarkand, I would give the second place to Registan. I recommend it for viewing. Better in the morning, fewer tourists. Excursions will be offered to those who want to. The service is not intrusive.
The memorial complex. It impresses with its beauty and scale of buildings. The whole architecture merges into a single whole. An interesting place to visit. Being in Samarkand, I definitely recommend visiting.
It's beautiful, but this is from a series of photos "expectation is reality" 😂 weekday, morning, and crowds of people - we only met more on the weekend in Timur's mausoleum. With a good guide, of course, it is interesting to hear about the history and about the features of architecture. Be prepared for a steep staircase, especially it is wonderful when descending 🙃
The best hotel in Bukhara! We really really liked it!!! Everything is at the highest level. Don't waste time looking for the best - stay at this hotel. We took a suite for the family. Wow!
One of the famous and significant sights of Samarkand. Located not far from the market, you can walk, the address is ul.Shahi Zinda, d1. open from 9:00 to 20:00. I visited in September 2024, the entrance cost 40,000 soums, for the local population 5000 soums. It is better to arrive early in the morning or closer to the evening, there will be fewer people.
Five stars exclusively for respect for the very place and history of Samarkand. In fact, I was waiting for more, you can get around in 10 minutes, after the Registry you can not compare. The only thing was without a guide. Perhaps it will be much more interesting with a guide. It is definitely worth visiting, but I would probably advise you to start exploring Samarkand, with Shahi Zinda, and not end up like us.
Beautiful, authentic, solemn. I don't know what other epithets to choose) the place where legends rest! Just walk around and enjoy the atmosphere and pray,,🙏
An amazing place! This is the best attraction not only in Samarkand, but also in the whole of Uzbekistan. Not a single merchant on the main territory of the complex - is it not a miracle?))
A stunning architectural ensemble. Very impressive. The mosaics and ornaments are of extraordinary beauty. It is difficult for elderly and disabled people to climb the mountain . Muslims come as a pilgrimage to holy places. Before visiting, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the rules of conduct and there are certain requirements for appearance
It is a very atmospheric place, we experienced tremendous emotional delight, tasted the whole national flavor. If you have visited the city of Samarkand, it is impossible not to visit this landmark complex. Definitely 10/10!
Ancient architecture, a very beautiful place, there is a place to hide from the sun and rain, I definitely recommend a visit to Samarkand, entrance 40,000 soums
The first attraction in Samarkand that you need to visit and, if you are limited in time, the only one.
It is beautiful, with a history, a fairly large territory.
Just a must see with no options.
A beautiful place with its own history and culture. The place looks more like mausoleum rooms, but this place looks like a place of worship of religion and historical memory. But in any case, it's worth coming and looking at the beauty of the buildings and historical architecture
A great historical place in Samarkand.
Shahi-Zinda is the only archaeological and architectural monument in Samarkand, in which, including the cultural strata of Afrasiab.
Most of the buildings belong to the Timurid era (XIV—XV centuries), and the restructuring of our time has practically not affected the composition and appearance of the complex. Mausoleums have turquoise finishes or are covered with dark blue tiles with floral ornaments.
Each mausoleum has its own unique style.
I really liked the beautiful place. I advise you if you visit this place, then choose the appropriate skirt, shorts should be below the knees, but if so, then at the entrance you may be given a handkerchief and a skirt of the appropriate length
Shahi Zinda is definitely one of the most interesting sights of Samarkand. The narrow street with mausoleums looks like a miniature compared to Bibi Khanum. There are many beautiful mausoleums that you can visit. Beautiful decoration. Benches for Zen)
I really liked the architectural solutions. Very beautifully made tombs. What I didn't like was the cost of entry. For foreigners 40,000 soums, for their 5,000 soums. We were led by the locals, like we were with them, and it was very pleasant.
The most authentic place in Samarkand. Having counted and passed 100 steps, the wish really comes true. It is better to take a guide with you, because it is difficult to understand the history of the mosaic, the history of each architectural structure. Don't leave money - it's a bad idea. A salted place!

Shahi-Zinda Necropolis. Another bright and centuries-old piece of my beloved Samarkand.
This is a complex of mausoleums in which the Timurid and Karakhanid nobles rest. The mausoleums are decorated with colorful mosaics and maelika, which resembles a kaleidoscope. She's just gorgeous in the sunlight. There is a "Magic staircase" at the entrance, for the atonement of sins))).
In several places, you can stumble upon pieces of the architecture of zaroostrism.
Shahi Zinda is surrounded by many interesting and mystical legends, but this is a completely different story.
It is a very interesting place, a beautiful cemetery, it is a pity that not all visitors understand this. You can look at different elements for hours. Admission is more expensive for tourists than for locals, you can pay with a card.
With a group of tourists from Volgograd, we were here in October 2023. From the Wiki we had the information " A monument of medieval architecture in Samarkand, an ensemble of mausoleums of the Karakhanid and Timurid nobility. The extant complex consists of eleven mausoleums, successively attached to each other during the XIV-XV centuries. Nevertheless, during excavations on the eastern slope of the settlement of Afrasiab, the remains of mausoleums of the XI-XII centuries were discovered. In 2001, the Shahi-Zinda mausoleum ensemble, along with other ancient buildings of Samarkand, was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List "Beauty, blue, openwork, scale, admiration - memories - for life!!!
A stunningly beautiful place! The tombs are richly decorated with frescoes of amazing beauty! Although Shahi Zinda is a burial place, but it is here that photo shoots are constantly arranged. The territory consists of a narrow passage, giving the appearance of a narrow street, constantly filled with tourists, along which there are amazingly beautiful tombs. While in Samarkand, be sure to visit Shahi Zinda! The impressions will be unforgettable!
