Ostrog Monastery is one of the most revered monasteries of the Orthodox Church, located high in the mountains of the central part of Montenegro, about 8 km from the town of Niksic. It was founded around the 17th century by Saint Basil of Ostrog, whose name became a symbol of the holiness and spirituality of the whole country.
Basic facts:
1. The history of the foundation
The monastery was founded between 1665-1670 by monk Basil, who later became a famous Orthodox ascetic and wonderworker. Vasily Ostrogsky lived most of his life here, performing miracles of healing, for which he soon became known far beyond the borders of Montenegro.
The upper monastery is located at an altitude of almost 900 meters above sea level, literally cut into the rock, offering a picturesque panorama of the mountains and valleys of Montenegro. The lower monastery is located just below the mountainside.
We visited in January 2025. Fog was coming down from the mountains, but the view was good. The mountain views from the observation deck are very beautiful. There are few visitors and we were able to park right in front of the entrance. If you stop at the bus stop below, then the trip to the monastery will not be easy.
The most important and holiest place in Montenegro. I have already been there many times and again and again there is a need to visit it. After overcoming a steep and narrow serpentine with a frightening sheer cliff, sometimes without proper fencing and the risk of meeting an oncoming car in the narrowest place or on a steep bend. You find yourself in a small, and very unconventional monastery. There is no familiar temple there. Several small chapels, everything that in ancient times could be located in a sheer cliff. In one of these chapels are the incorruptible relics of Vasily Ostrogsky. It is surprising that a human figure can be guessed under the veil without obvious signs of shrinkage, as is typical for most relics. If you come on weekdays, you can venerate the relics freely, without fuss and crowds. It is necessary to visit the upper terrace - a favorite place of prayer and later - the resting place of the Saint. A vine planted by Vasily Ostrogsky grows right out of the rock there, which bears fruit to this day. And the view from there is majestic. You can climb to the monastery on foot, along a narrow forest path surrounded by abundantly blooming snowdrops, or cyclamen.
The main monastery of Montenegro is Ostrog. It was carved into the rock at a kilometer height in the 17th century. A place of extraordinary sanctity for all Montenegrins.
An unforgettable place
A place of grace! If possible, be sure to stop for at least one night, watch the sunset and sunrise, go to the Service, listen to the sounds of nature.
Of course, this is an amazing place, I've wanted to come here for a long time. Who is just going to go, you will not regret it. We went in winter, it was cool, But nature and service on the mountain in the open air, this is something that is not clogged. The brethren of the monastery are always glad to see Russian pilgrims
Very impressive. The shrine is located 900 meters above sea level. The views are simply amazing. There are the relics of the Serbian Saint Basil of Ostrog. I definitely advise you to visit.
It's just an amazing place! The monastery is located at the cloud level. You can get there by car, there is a parking lot at the top, and then walk up the stairs a little more.
The place is very interesting. The history of creation too. In general, it is interesting to visit. A place of power for believers. There are many steps, wear comfortable shoes!
Grace visits your heart and soul in this beautiful monastery 🤍
It is impossible to describe in words 🙏
I took a local train from Podgorica to Dobaeci station, where taxis are waiting for the trains to arrive. To the lower monastery 5 euros, to the upper 10 euros.
I walked back: from the upper to the lower monastery 3 km is about 40 minutes, from the lower monastery to the station it takes longer than 3.5 km along the scenic road for about an hour.
A beautiful place in the mountains. The relics of St. Nicholas are located here. Vasily Ostrogsky. In Serbia and Montenegro, he is revered as a priest. Sergius of Radonezh or St. Sergius of Radonezh. Seraphim of Sarov in Russia. Therefore, there are almost always many pilgrims in the prison.
I did not expect that there would be such a large number of pilgrims. People were even sleeping outside. It was the month of July, maybe it's always like this at this time.
Of course, we didn't get inside. Maybe next time.
But the structure is certainly impressive.
We always come here when we are in Montenegro. It is one of the largest shrines in the world. Saint Basil of Ochtrozhsky is with us always and everywhere. Thanks to him for his help!!!
A super place, who will be in Montenegro to visit for sure. I've been there four times already, it's better to come on a weekday afternoon, there are fewer people at this time
A holy place. The view is extremely beautiful. You are amazed how Vasily could carve a monostyr in the rock. If you were able to get to it and returned safely, then a miracle has happened.
It's just a magical place, it fascinates, cleanses the soul. She came out a different person after him. I strongly advise EVERYONE to visit it. Words cannot convey this.
The lift from the parking lot to the monastery is 2 euros per person for transportation. There is a large queue at the entrance. Low prices for goods. Take a lot of change.
Be sure to visit here. The most picturesque road along the valley, climbing up.
It is better not in season and on a working day
Then you can enjoy the peace and quiet.
The magnificent place is very beautiful! And the main thing is that this place really helps those who turn to it for help!!! Suffice it to say that this is the only Orthodox Church to which all religions go!!!
An amazing place! Very soothing, but at the same time, very informative. I will definitely come again if I get the opportunity!

It is quite dangerous to go there by car. I personally came across the fact that I had to drive two cars apart on a very narrow mountain road. It is better to climb on foot.
It's amazing! The monastery left a lot of emotions! This is probably one of the main religious attractions of the whole of Montenegro. It was founded in the XVII century at an altitude of about 900 meters above sea level. The imperishable relics of its founder Vasilich Ostrogsky are kept in the monastery. They say there are only 12 monks living in the monastery.
