The 5th Fort Museum is an amazing place that leaves a strong impression. The building itself looks like a real historical artifact, and the opportunity to explore it literally from top to bottom is a real pleasure. At the beginning of the tour, you will be greeted by a small museum, which tells about the history of the fort, its construction, everyday life and similar structures in Belarus, Russia and nearby European countries.
After the museum, you can freely walk through the tunnels and rooms, as well as go to the surface and explore the surroundings. We were lucky enough to visit the fort at the end of August, the day before the reenactment event, which allowed us to communicate with the reenactors. Their presence added to the entourage and helped to better understand how everything was arranged here in the past.
Personally, I liked the 5th Fort even more than the Brest Fortress, due to its atmosphere and interactivity. However, it is worth considering that the location may present some difficulties for those who use taxis, and the owners of the Life operator may have problems with mobile communication. In addition, I would not recommend combining a visit to the 5th fort with the Brest Fortress in one day, as there may not be enough time to carefully explore all corners and enjoy the atmosphere of both locations. But a visit to the 5th Fort is definitely worth including in your plan if you are interested in history and architecture.
A powerful structure. Almost all the galleries are open. It is not inferior in scale to the forts of Konigsberg, but the impression is that it has been preserved better. The architecture is very similar. We didn't go on the tour - we got tired after the Brest Fortress proper. It's very impressive, but I think history lovers need to take a guided tour. The latrine of the beginning of the XX century has been preserved))) Unfortunately, it is not functioning.
I can advise you to clear the rampart of the fort - there is a jungle there, it is not clear where the rampart is, where the moat is, where the caponier is for flanking fire. You will be much clearer. I recommend you to visit!
As for a person who visited this place for the first time, I'm just thrilled! I liked it very much, the museum is really quite small, but it's interesting, the guides tell the story in a fascinating way and sort out all the information. There are a lot of mazes, there are illuminated and unlit areas, it is best to take a flashlight with you. The territory is clean and tidy. I will definitely go again!
