Although the construction of the fortress in Kyrenia began during the time of Ancient Rome, the Kyrenian Castle acquired its current appearance in the middle of the XVI century, during the Venetian period. Nevertheless, the oldest building on the castle grounds is the Byzantine chapel of St. George (12th century).
