Probably the most famous temple in Tbilisi. It is picturesquely located on the steep bank of the Kura River, next to the monument to the founder of the city Vakhtang Gorgasali and an observation deck.
It is believed that the modern temple building was built in the XVII–XVIII centuries.

Nothing special, just a functioning temple. I was on duty. Grandmothers shush at visitors (they got up in the wrong place, put a candle in the wrong place, or looked at it) instead of being transmitted to prayer. It is not pleasant to be there, unlike other temples. Perhaps, if you come at an untimely time, the attitude towards the parishioners is different.

A powerful and amazing place!
It is very pleasant that Georgians as one love their country and are proud of it.
We walked right at the foot of the fortress, right by the water. The views of Tbilisi are gorgeous.
There is an entrance to the temple, everything is functioning, a pleasant priest, everyone is good-natured and bright. I fell in love with Tbilisi!

Weddings and Christenings of children are often held in this temple. The temple grounds are very beautiful. The flower beds are constantly being updated. It's nice to sit there, relax, breathe in the aromas, and enjoy the views of the city from the observation deck.

The heart of old Tbilisi is the ancient Metekhi Temple. A magnificent view. Sprawled over the Kura River, it has been silently looking at the city from a high cliff for centuries, and carefully preserves memories from the Past. He had to go through a lot. Everyone who is not indifferent to the history of Georgia will definitely find something to visit in Georgia during their trip. They should definitely visit the ancient district of Tbilisi - Metekhi, located between the Avlabari district and the Old Town. This area is full of ancient buildings, but its main attraction is the temple of the same name from the 12th century, located on a cliff with a wonderful view of the capital.
It was from the Metekhi area that the development of Tbilisi began in the 5th century AD, when King Vakhtang Gorgasal founded the city. During the archaeological excavations across the river from Metekhi, some ruins were discovered — according to assumptions, this was the first palace complex that served as a royal residence.
The area's attractions include the following:
Metekhi Temple, built in the 12th century at the same time as the fort fortress on top of the cliff;
the grave of the holy Georgian Great Martyr Shushanik, who was killed during the construction of the hypothetical Vakhtang Gorgasala Palace;
monument to the founder of Tbilisi Vakhtang Gorgasal, erected on the observation deck of the cliff;
Metekhi Bridge, built to replace the oldest wooden bridge over the Kura River in Tbilisi;
the restaurant "In the shadow of Metekhi", located near the cliff, where you can taste delicious dishes of national cuisine, including shish kebab, khachapuri and Georgian wine.
