Was there once, operas and balets are amazing, the singers are legendary, met some of them personally. But to be honest, it's a bit too shabby behind the scenes as they were seen a little after the opera has ended. For a theater of such scale it'd be great if they did some renovations in the corridors.
The history of the most important opera and ballet theater in Kazakhstan began back in 1933. Then a small studio was opened in Almaty by a group of musical performers and actors. The birth of the first theater in the country was marked by the production of the musical comedy "Aiman-Sholpan" by M. Auezov. Over time, the number of theater workers and productions increased, and the studio was a success. It was decided to build a separate building for the needs of the theater.
Construction was carried out for five years (from 1936 to 1941) in the Golden Square area. The architects were N.A. Kruglov (the author of the project, who was later exiled), N.A. Prostakov and T.K. Basenov.
The theater was named after Abai in 1945. It is popularly called GATOB (State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater), although it is no longer academic.
A gorgeous Soviet monumental building, the construction of which was started before the Great Patriotic War (in 7 years). An excellent example of the architecture of that time, the Stalinist Empire. Inside, everything is so decorous, monumental, thorough. Thanks to architect Kruglov for this example of beautiful architecture in a city where for the last 20 years they have only been sculpting monotonous concrete boxes. Near the theater there is a magnificent park on both sides. It is so calm, peaceful, with fountains, there is such an extraordinary aura here. What a pleasure it is to sit in these parks and admire the GATOBa building on a warm spring or autumn day. Trolleybuses of route 9, one of the oldest routes in the city, are scurrying around the theater. And if you sit near the theater on a working day, then from the windows to the neighboring parks you can hear the amazing voices of opera singers during rehearsals. It is good that this theater is devoid of the pomposity and arrogance of the Astana theater. It's so nice inside and out here!
The theater is very beautiful and rich in decoration. There is a very respectful attitude towards the public. I paid attention to the audience itself. The beauty of the outfits and the respectful attitude when attending the performance. The performance of the actors is wonderful, the scenery and decoration are wonderful. I think that having arrived in Almaty, it is necessary to visit here.
The best place to spend weekends or evenings. Ballet, opera, operetta artists are beyond praise. You get real pleasure from visiting this theater. While waiting for the performance, you can get acquainted with the history of the theater or visit the cozy buffet, where you can enjoy tea, coffee and tea. drinks, as well as snacks.
I listened to the opera La Traviata, I liked everything! The beautiful building is classic from the outside and national decor in the interiors. The hall is very beautiful, the ceiling is just like a mountain blue sky. The acoustics are very decent, you don't even notice it, the sounds fly into the hall. There is a gorgeous exhibition of stage costumes in the lobby of the third tier.
AS WE USED TO SAY, GATOB OR OPERA AND BALLET THEATER. THIS IS OUR PRIMA. OUR CULTURAL RECREATION CENTER. MANY GUESTS OF OUR CITY WANT TO VISIT THE THEATER. THE BEST AND MOST BEAUTIFUL ARTISTS ARE IN OUR THEATER. ALL THE PRODUCTIONS ARE SUPER GREAT. IN GENERAL, YOU NEED TO VISIT AND SEE FOR YOURSELF. 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹
A chic theater of the Soviet era.
One of the few pieces of knowledge that was not sold, but also preserved.
Unfortunately, actors, namely ballerinas and ballerinas, are very far from good choreography and synchronicity. I was really disappointed. I thought that there would be at least 3 pairs who would want to perform at least something synchronously. But alas. Disappointed.
I guess I'm used to the beautiful and the beautiful and I don't like amateurism. I don't want to offend anyone. But the last visit showed that in some elementary schools, some actions can be performed more synchronously. Of course, the actors have both a bearing and a stretch. But the lack of synchronicity breaks everything. Maybe there won't be such a disappointment in a solo performance.
I love coming here. Our troupe are great professionals. The last one I watched was Ballet Coppelia. We also watched Spartacus, The Nutcracker, and listened to the Bat.
Conductors, orchestras. Everything is on top. It's nice to watch and listen.
The costumes in Coppelia are just beautiful.
The best theater in the country! I visited the Nutcracker Ballet today and was very impressed! Our dancers are incredibly talented. If you love classical art, be sure to visit!
Each country should have its own national opera and ballet theater. But only in some cases it is so magnificent, there is something to be proud of. Thanks to the Soviet government for such a building, for creating a galaxy of outstanding artists, whose creative heritage is in the current team of celebrities.
A magnificent theater! We were at the Kazakh opera Kyz Zhibek. Top class! Brilliant! We recommend it to everyone! If you will be in Kazakhstan, you will definitely visit. Tickets are cheap
The best opera house!!!According to the interior, the most beautiful!!!The ballet company is one of the best!Believe me, I've been to different theaters!Costumes, scenery, choreography are on top!!!
I was born in Almaty, I live in Russia. I often come and stay at the Almaty hotel, so every time I come to GATOB.11.10 I was on Kyz Zhibek. Impressive!!! The theater should flourish, the artists should have good health and creative success!!!
Undoubtedly, it is very good! Commitment to the traditions of World art and the search for a new "own". Perfect choreography... I want to visit here more often... Good luck to you!
A historical place, the Kazakh National Academic Theater. Since childhood, we kids have been going to the Christmas trees here every year. And when I was older, I watched the ballet Swan Lake, The Nutcracker.
It was a good theater, I went to the ballet, it was very interesting, the halls were large and spacious, the music, the actors, the lights, everything was fine, after it there were only good memories
A wonderful theater of the Soviet era is a building.
Unfortunately, the skill of the actors is a little disappointing. I want coherence and precision of movements. Relaxation, lack of rehearsals... The result is weak.
Beauty - outside and inside! We were a family at the opening night of the musical season, the concert was held in the lobby. The acoustics are good, the rows of chairs are arranged in a semicircle, convenient. In the first row there were visitors in wheelchairs, the organizers - well done! The emotions of the performers were transmitted to the audience, everything is clearly visible, intimacy and warmth! Accompanying the presenter is interesting .and informative. After the concert, several groups of young people were photographed together in a large mirror on the stairs. In the evening, there is a beautiful lighting design near the theater, the proximity of the metro allows you to quickly get a large company to other areas without a taxi.
Liked it :) neat, bright, and beautiful. But what I liked most was that for the first time I understood what the opera was about - there are screens on the edges of the stage on which there are subtitles for the Italian text. And it's very cool!
The building of the Kazakh State Academic Theater named after Abai — GATOB is one of the most famous sights of the city. GATOB is one of the largest theaters in the Eurasian space.
Let's start with dessert - park before the performance in the theater area - "mission impossible"! If possible, choose a taxi for a trip to Gatob..
Now about the theater - it's great inside! I was in it for the first time after the restoration - it's very beautiful!
The impression of the ballet is twofold: we watched Shazerezpda and Carmen. I'm not a fan)) but for the overall development, a change of scenery around and a pleasant evening with the children is not bad at all.
The history of our city, the Opera House! It was built back in 1937, during the war, the Bolshoi Theater troupe was evacuated here. My mother and grandmother saw performances with the Great Galina Ulanova! And now the theater's artists continue to delight with opera and ballet productions. Not so long ago, we watched a wonderful, ageless performance of Romeo and Juliet!!
The most beautiful and inspiring building in our city. A symbol of deep love for the beauty, sublimity and culture of our city and the people living in it!
Great theater. In general, everything is fine with theaters in Kazakhstan, the audience is very warm and friendly. In general, the audience is beautiful, it's nice to walk around the lobby, the people are very intelligent, beautiful
This is a temple of Culture , a building that is already a symbol of an entire era .What an atmosphere and smell, if you are tired of everything, I advise you to buy a ticket to the Nutcracker ballet and come with your children and grandchildren to this performance - magic is provided for you!
The pride of the cultural capital of Kazakhstan. It was built by the Soviet Union during the war years for the sake of the artists who moved here to evacuate. I always solemnly come here to watch the ballet. With the advent of the Ticket, the practice of resellers, which had previously been a strong problem, was eliminated. Tickets are always online. Ballets are often sold out. It is better to book the Nutcracker and Swan Lake a month in advance. Yes, there is a museum on the 3rd floor, be sure to take a walk there during the intermission!
The theater is wonderful, everything is saturated with art, it is very inspiring. But it's a pity that they don't support it, the repair is old, the decorations are shabby. It would be possible to make a candy bar, it is a pity that the state does not allocate the necessary funds. The staff of the theater are wonderful people, they are all so responsible about their work, with love. The artists are amazing too.
The landmark of our city! Be sure to visit the Kazakh National Opera and Ballet Theater named after Abai. This is the business card of Almaty! The most famous masters of the stage are included in the creative group of the theater. Get great pleasure from visiting!
The Opera House in Almaty is very beautiful. The hall is very cozy and has good acoustics. I listened to Rossini - "The Barber of Seville". Perhaps the best "Barber" of all. And I've listened to at least 8 live in different theaters.
The performance turned out to be very light, dynamic, funny, as it should be. Very good voices.
Bravo!
Excellent location, in the city center, the landmark of Almaty with the wonderful architecture of the Stalin era. Good opera and ballet productions by both local artists and those touring from neighboring countries.
One of the attractions of the city. The building, which has been told by many historical figures, contains the spirit and talent of our people in the heart.
Very atmospheric, on the top floor D. Satpayev created a minimuseum and a history of clothes worn by our art luminaries
A wonderful theater. The landmark of Almaty. The interior is chic. Comfortable chairs. Excellent acoustics. A talented young troupe. An interesting repertoire. Last time we were at the "Nutcracker" with the whole family. Everyone really liked it!
Minus that the design remained Soviet . The development of art at a low level probably erases the Akim that beauty originality culture is not important, it is important that something is there

The other day I visited a sightseeing tour of Almaty with the Melan Drive company, and I want to share my impressions.
The tour began with the main sights of the city. The route took into account the most iconic places: the park named after 28 Panfilov Guards, Medeu and many other interesting points. The highlight of the day was a visit to the Abai Opera and Ballet Theater. It was something magical!
Childhood memories are very vivid. I've been to the Christmas Tree several times. And watched the ballet. Now I still remember the childish surprise, what light artists.
An amazing theater and a very beautiful production – the ballet "Coppelia": costumes, artists, choreography, beautiful music… All in one go... ❤️
But, unfortunately, the visit to the theater was overshadowed by the internal "kitchen". We descend to everyday life, instead of enjoying art.
Namely, the employees of the theater, who threatened that they would not let me in next time if I came in a sports one. But I was wearing a defiantly stylish smart casual, my very expensive sweater, which I couldn't put in the wardrobe because there are no hangers there. And from the "sports", apparently, I was wearing only a headdress.
I wonder why there is a history of double standards? Half of those present in the hall, including some employees of the theater themselves, were in a completely untidy and casual appearance: worn sneakers, T-shirts, vests, jackets, market hoodies, jeans, torn jeans.
I do not approve of such a wardrobe, but, dear theater management, either introduce mandatory rules for everyone without exception, strict etiquette, or exclude such incidents.
Nicely. It's impressive. Kazakh actors looked very nice and unusual for our eyes. But they played great. And in general, the production was performed flawlessly, which surprised us a lot. I recommend. And I will come again myself as soon as I arrive in the city.
A good museum, spacious. The story is "posted" in an accessible and multifaceted way. The building itself was very impressive, especially from the outside. And the area around is beautiful and big, like the history of Kazakhstan. I advise you to visit.
The building has been recently renovated. Very beautiful, stylishly decorated interiors. There is a lot of gold, but it fits very harmoniously into the space. Quite a chamber auditorium with excellent acoustics. The seats in the auditorium are arranged so that from everywhere what is happening on the stage is clearly visible and audible. An interesting exposition of costumes and costume elements from productions in the past. The performances are all at the highest level, I especially want to note the level of ballet - it's just a delight! A must-visit place for residents and visitors of the city.
I visit the Abai Opera and Ballet Theater at least 3 times a season. It is a very atmospheric place. The beautiful performances, the costumes, the orchestra - everything is just amazing. I love it, my favorite theater.

This is the best theater in our city. This is a historic building. It's great both outside and inside. And what operas and ballets performed by our wonderful artists, under the guidance of the most talented musicians, choreographers.
The interior of the theater is great, if you come a little earlier, you can make a lot of great photos for social networks. While waiting for the performance, you can not only visit the buffet, but also visit the theater museum, and admire the servants of the muses. And, of course, professionals of the highest level, masters of opera and ballet, will make your evening unforgettable
