It's worth coming up here. The climb is difficult. I do not recommend going with small children. They will get tired and you will carry them on yourself, but it is hard to walk here without a burden. There is a more gentle rise, but longer and shorter, but very steep, without trails. Be sure to bring water with you. Even if you drink on the way, do not throw away the bottle. Thank yourself when you get to the top. You will be very thirsty. You will need an empty bottle upstairs to get water from the well. You will be delighted with the views from above this mountain. The fortress is active upstairs, services are underway. There is a chapel.

There is a water source, a well. It's hard to climb. You can follow the serpentine in the sun, we walked straight through the forest-steeper, but shorter and there is a shadow with a breeze. A trail for good shoes! We climbed for about an hour.

I climbed for 35 minutes - from the entrance to the New Athos cave to the top.
The views from the top (350m above sea level) are amazing! It's worth getting up!

The impression was slightly spoiled by the fact that we paid for the passage (although, as everywhere, without tickets or checks, well, okay), but no one bothered to warn us that at a certain time the tower on the mountain closes, and after we climbed up, after a couple of minutes the male caretaker began to kick us out. So keep this in mind and clarify it better in advance.

In Abkhazia, everything created by nature is gorgeous... It is most comfortable to get by taxi (for 200 rubles.) to the ticket office, yes, entrance to the mountain is paid - adult 300, children (from 7 years old) 150. And how to go further - you can choose, you can follow the path (serpentine), or straight up the mountain, all one, all one will come from climbing. It is more difficult, but faster, in any case, stock up on water still at the bottom, otherwise you will spend all your vacation money on "golden" water. The view from above is beautiful, there is an inexhaustible well, a ruined temple, a fortress, but to be honest...Nothing special 🤷♀️ Take a look once for a change.

I was there in June 2024. I recommend visiting this place. If by car, I recommend driving from the entrance to the Athos caves, there is a paid parking upstairs. Entrance to the mountain to the castle is paid. Then walk up to the castle. Be sure to climb the observation tower. Beautiful view!

If you love fortresses and beautiful views, spare no effort, take a supply of water with you, do not forget a headdress, put on clothes that protect from the sun, comfortable shoes and go ahead! The road from the ticket office is unpaved, winding in a serpentine. In places, you can cut its bends with paths much uphill, if this does not frighten you. There are benches along the way to relax. There is very little shadow. In hot weather, the sun just roasts, keep this in mind. And remember that there is a toilet upstairs, you do not need to arrange it under every bush!!! It smells!

I definitely recommend you to visit. Gain strength and enthusiasm....drinking water and go ahead. We went up with my husband on foot from the very bottom of the city, although there are suggestions not far from the entrance to the cave to climb the mountain on an iron horse. It is, of course, easier and faster....there is always a choice! They charge a fee for admission, like 200 rubles. Quite a reasonable price. The road up is rocky, wear comfortable shoes. You'll get there in flip-flops too, but why feel discomfort?) Most of the road is shaded by trees. There are cows lying or walking. What you will see when you get to the top is wonderful. Beautiful views! Magnificent! There is a temple with an icon of the Iverian Mother of God on the mountain. Pray, ask....

My favorite place in Abkhazia. "To visit New Athos and not visit the Iverian Mountain is like visiting the Vatican and not seeing the Pope." The view of the tower from the Anakopian Fortress is simply amazing! On one side there is a sea with a horizon line of 70 km. the view, and on the other hand, the stunning mountains.
