The road to the grotto and the grotto itself is a thrilling event. It is difficult to describe emotions without pathos. I sat on the sacred stone. God save Russia and Abkhazia
Beautiful nature all around. Everything is green.
In the cell itself, one feels that the place is salted, bright, and clean.
It was hard to get up in the heat.
Some dipped into the spring. But the water seemed icy to me. I didn't risk such temperature fluctuations.
When going there, count your strength - there are very steep steps at the finish line and there are a lot of them. We were there in April and it was hot to climb, take water with you. In general, the route to the grotto is very picturesque.
It is truly a sacred place, and I wish every believer to visit it. In the cell (now the chapel), you can pray with a novice of the monastery, read the akathist to Simon Kananita.
After you have arrived at New Athos, take the time to visit the Monastery of Simon the Canonite, and then on the way you will go up to the Grotto (rather a cave) on the path there will be a trace of Simon the Canonite on the stone, Then the place where he was killed (there in the stream everyone collects pebbles with red inclusions it is believed that this is the frozen blood of Simon the Canonite). And then there will be the Grotto of Simon the Canonite, carefully climb the steps they are very steep in the grotto itself it is very stuffy (because of the candles), it is dark and there is little space. There is a very picturesque nature all around while you visit spiritual values. I recommend that you go there and you won't regret it.
The cave - grotto of Simon Kananita is located on an elevation near the Psyrtskha River. According to legend, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, Simon the Zealot (or Cananite), lived in this place. He is revered as an educator of Abkhazia, who worked hard to spread Christian teaching and preaching. Initially, it was the cell in which Simon Kananit lived. Later it became a chapel. There are many different icons on its walls, among which the most revered is the image of Simon the Cananite, made of mosaics. Visitors to the cave can pray, read the akathist, talk to the caretaker and get comfort and answers to their questions. According to your faith, you will be rewarded!
This is a very beautiful park, firstly, the air is amazing, the silence and the singing of birds. And a holy place for believers, secondly. When you reach the cell of Simon the Canaanite, you first wonder how it was possible to live here alone? And then an understanding of why the apostle chose such a place.. I advise you to definitely visit here
