Elephant Caves, dedicated to Shiva, are located 10 km from Mumbai on Elephant Island. The complex is known for rock art, consisting of two groups of caves — Hindu and Buddhist. The origin of these caves is not known for certain. Initially, the island was called Garapuri, then it was renamed Elephant by the Portuguese when they found a stone elephant at the landing site. Visiting this cave is on the list of the best excursions in India.
