very average stay in the heart of Almaty.
Location is good. Facilities are kept clean. Never felt too crowded. Good lockers. Price is cheap.
Atmosphere can be strange. To be honest, this hostel simply attracts weirdos. I felt uncomfortable with some of the people, mostly men and locals that seem to be living there.
I was okay with this hostel until the last day. Upon collecting my bags at 4PM, the woman repeatedly told me that “check out was at 12 check out was at 12!!”
The thing is I did check out, I left the Hostel. I gave her the key, and I didn’t use any of the facilities. I just left my bags in a corner of the room and didn’t use or need anything else. She kept pointing to the sign, but what am I supposed to do— leave my bags out on the street? It was just 4 hours!
I didn’t ask her to watch my bags. I just left them in a corner of the room. This isn’t even ‘luggage storage’ because that is paying someone to keep an eye over your bags and put them away safely.
They should clarify in the beginning that “no bags can be left inside the hostel after noon” if it is really such a big problem. I wouldn’t book here again just because of this situation. Makes no sense for anyone that has traveled (but maybe the owners have never traveled in their life.)
Positive:
-Very good location - it is convenient to get anywhere in the city, close to the metro and bus stops.
- The rooms don't smell. I've been to many hostels, and the smell of sweat and dirt was everywhere in the rooms. This is usually the sin of the regular guests of these hostels, who do not wash for a long time. But there were no unpleasant odors in this hostel.
- Pleasant and attentive receptionist. I checked in for a week, but there were no lower seats at the time of arrival. She specifically specified which place I wanted, and I asked for the bottom one, if possible. She told me to wait, and on the second day she came, she said that the lower place was vacant, and we could move. I was pleased with such care, usually in hostels, even small ones, they just put you up in fact, and then no one cares about you.
Minuses:
- The hostel has two bathrooms: one for women and one for men. They have two toilet cubicles and one shower. Of course, that's not enough, there's a queue for showers in the evenings. Well, the shower itself is just covered with a curtain, there is one common sink right in front of it, there is no dressing room.
- In my room, the guests were generally good, friendly, and cultured. But in another room there was a group of grown men who constantly occupied a shared sofa, talked loudly and watched TV, including at late hours, although there are papers everywhere where the "quiet" time is indicated.
-Bunk beds of an inconvenient model. They can be installed in an apartment, but they are not suitable for a hostel at all. The first tier can still be covered with a blanket or sheet, but the second one is not enclosed at all.
Overall, a very good hostel for your money, I can recommend it.
