The monument to St. George with a fountain is located in the III Courtyard of Prague Castle, in front of the Presidential Palace and St. Vitus Cathedral. It's a copy now. Origigal dates back to 1373 and is the first equestrian figure in Central Europe, the oldest Gothic composition! The authors of the original monument, which is now located in the Lapidaurim of the National Museum, are Jiri and Martin with Kluge.
St. George is on a low pedestal, the figure is small in size, the proximity of the monument to the person looking at it is unusual. George pierces with a spear with a banner the mouth of a serpent wrapping its tail around the horse's leg. Such an image of a Saint, rather resembling a medieval knight, is certainly the idea of the people of that time. The fountain is a small stream of water from some other snake's head.
With the arrival of Christianity from Byzantium to the Czech Republic, St. George immediately becomes the protector and patron of all princes and kings, therefore His Temples and images are close to the ruling power. The veneration of St. George the Victorious was and remains a guarantee of the security, defense capability and stability of the state!
