It's an amazing surreal place. Very specific, masterfully made sculptures. Whole plots with statues on one tombstone, and, also, stone naked beautiful dead virgins, statues of corpses in death throes, huge sad angels with a scythe of death standing full-length on the grave, souls silently screaming flying out of an open body, mothers wringing their hands scratching slabs, a scattering of Lilliputian angels blowing dust from steles and Jesus, Jesus, Jesus....
Fantastic crypts, whole palaces and pyramids.
Many statues and busts have darkened from time to time and are covered with some kind of moss and lichen so that it seems like a time-worn corpse is ominously advancing, wandering or climbing out of the ground. The feeling that the eyes of such busts are burning, phosphorescent, perhaps this is also lichen trapped in the stone pupils.
We walked in the afternoon in the sun and people were around us, but the feeling that we were some special strangers here, that we were lambs in the thicket did not leave me.
I highly recommend visiting. Not for pampering, for a special mood, with respect for this place.
