Alexander Nevsky Lavra is not a place you visit only to see an old monastery. If you do, you will have seen only half of it. What makes this place unforgettable is not just the height of its domes or the age of its stones, but the weight of memory that Saint Petersburg carries within these walls. Once you pass through the gates, the city seems to lower its voice. After a few steps, you realize that you are walking not only among churches, but among lives that belonged to other centuries. Somewhere there is the sound of a bell, somewhere else a moss-covered gravestone, and a little further on, a silent necropolis that has become part of the memory of Russian literature, music, and art. When I stood before Dostoevsky’s grave, no line from his novels came to my mind. Perhaps that was the right thing. There is something strange about thinking that after thousands of pages written over a lifetime, what remains is a stone and a name. Then you look around and notice that the same silence has gathered Tchaikovsky, Karamzin, Glinka, and so many others into itself. Death may seem to make people equal here, but memory still keeps each of them distinct. And yet, Lavra made me think not so much about death, but about survival. Empires passed through these walls. Revolution passed through them. Prohibitions, war, and silence passed through them as well. People closed these buildings, removed sacred objects, tried to interrupt memory itself; then other people came, reopened the doors, restored the stones, and continued remembering. Perhaps this is one of the places where Saint Petersburg reveals its true nature. This city is not beautiful only because of its palaces and canals, but because of the stubborn way it carries what it has lost. As I was leaving Alexander Nevsky Lavra, I turned back one last time and looked at the dome. Some places leave you with photographs. Some places leave you with a thought you did not have before.

We took a stroll here and it's a lovely monastery with beautiful gardens and a very peaceful place. We also visited the cemetery which is immaculately preserved.
