Namdaemun Gate (also known as Sungnemun) is the No. 1 national treasure of South Korea. Yes, literally so. The gate is included in the list of national treasures, national treasure at number 1. The gate was built back in the 14th century and marked the southern border of Seoul (by the way, the name itself translates as "Great Southern Gate"). All the key events of Korea took place here; the gate was one of the eight gates to the city. The Namdaemun Gate was seriously damaged during the Korean War; of course, it was rebuilt, and in 2008, a man, offended by not being paid for his insurance, set fire to the gate. And they burned down... The restoration took five years and now the gates are reopened. To be honest, in Seoul, it seems to me, there is no single center, as in most European cities, and therefore many monuments stand in unexpected places for us. Here, for example, there are only new buildings, new roads and gates surrounded by these new structures that cause some confusion... on the other hand, if you look at the photos of the 19th century, where the huts stood around them... It's better this way. The gate itself is stunningly beautiful. It seems to me that you should definitely come here if you come to Seoul. After all, it is the main national treasure of the country...
