Peter's Fortress is a Byzantine fortress with well—preserved ruins. The fortress is located on the Black Sea coast 17 kilometers north of Batumi. The fortress was built in the 6th century by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. The need to build the fortress was due to its strategic location on the trade route connecting Persia, Armenia and Byzantium with Western Georgia, as well as its proximity to sea transportation. In 541, the Persian Shah Khosrow I captured the fortress of Peter, and then fortified it even more. In 549, Justinian sent a large army to regain the fortress and power in the Lazar kingdom. In 551, another Byzantine commander, Bessus, was able to capture Peter's fortress, and in order not to have to retake the strategic object in the future, it was decided to destroy the fortress. The name "Petra" comes from the Greek word meaning "stone, rock". Due to the protective factors, the fortress became impregnable to enemies, which gave rise to its second name — "Gareji" (enchanted fortress). The architecture of the fortress is a combination of Byzantine and Georgian architecture. On the territory of the fortress there are ruins of fortress walls, towers, residential and outbuildings, as well as St. Peter's Church, from which the fortress probably got its name. 7-meter-high double walls with loopholes and embrasures for guns, as well as several massive towers, have been preserved. In the center of the territory is the foundation of a three—nave basilica with fragments of exterior cladding and a bathhouse. There is a food storage room on site, a half—sunk structure with a stone arched vault and steps. A dilapidated clay bowl embedded in the ground, where rainwater is now collected, used to be a reservoir for storing drinking water. The territory of the fortress is open to the public. There are walking routes inside, and information signs are installed. There are viewing platforms with views of the sea and mountains. In 2020, a large-scale reconstruction of the fortress was carried out: it was cleared of dense thickets of bushes and ivy, a new path was built to the top and an observation deck was set up directly above the sea. Since 1989, the fortress has been officially declared a historical and architectural museum-reserve.

One of the advantages is the steep view of the sea, Kobuleti GEL 15 for admission, it's not worth it. If the entrance was free, yes, it is mandatory to visit. That's what I would have thought....

Beautiful fortress on a hill, sea views, beautiful terraces-lemonaries. I liked the two small museums with exhibits found in and around the fortress. The exposition is beautifully and modernly decorated, and the staff talks in detail about the exhibits. And in general, everything is done very modernly and stylishly. Walking here is a pleasure. In September, there were almost no visitors in rainy weather, and the atmosphere was wonderful.

The only thing remarkable about this place is its wonderful sea view. Everything else is ruins, for which you will pay GEL 15 as a foreigner, 10 if you are a local. I do not recommend visiting. The same marshes near Kobuleti are much better and more interesting. Or the Nokalakevi fortress. There is a 10 lari entrance, the same ruins, but there is an excellent descent through a tunnel to a mountain river where you can cool off. There are also hot springs nearby.

A well-preserved example of a Caucasian fortress. From the observation deck there is a magnificent view of the sea and Kobuleti. Wine and cognac bottles are buried on the territory. And there is a small museum section on the terrace. There is also a bamboo grove nearby, where they sell all kinds of handicrafts made from it.

There is a mini museum with the history of the settlement. Green terraces with vineyards and paths. The territory of the fortress is not large in area, well-groomed and beautiful. Admission is GEL 8 per adult. Near the fortress in the village of Tsikhisdziri there is a Petro Beach with a waterfall and a wooden beach with a banana grove. Everything is within walking distance.

There's not much to do here. The entire location can be viewed in 20 minutes. A pile of stones with a history. Even the taxi driver on the way there said: Well, a fortress is like a fortress, there are many of them here. Nevertheless, my husband liked this place. I conclude: for an amateur. If you like ancient stones and places "with history", you may like it. It didn't go well for me. Of the inconveniences: it is difficult to go back- taxi drivers go far (they come only if they pay by card, which is irrelevant in our case) and you either have to wait until a car or a bus turns up. In our case, we had to look for a return car for 40 minutes.

The landscape is incredibly beautiful! Lizards scurry along the walls, huge grasshoppers jump in the grass and colorful butterflies fly.
