The paper crane is connected with the story of the Japanese girl Sadako Sasaki, who survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, but died of leukemia. Sadako believed in the legend that a thousand paper cranes could bring healing even to a seriously ill person. The girl's story became known all over the world, and Sadako's name and the paper crane became a symbol of the struggle for peace and a constant reminder of the terrible consequences of a nuclear explosion.
