Chernobyl Castle is a wooden fortification of the XV—XVII centuries on the banks of the Pripyat River in Chernobyl (Vyshgorodsky district of the Kiev region). Already in the 14th century, there was a Castle on this site of the city of Chernobyl, where the princes who ruled the city and the surrounding villages lived. The Castle was often destroyed due to uprisings, revolutions and other social upheavals. Unfortunately, today this building is no longer there, as well as there are no photos or drawings of its appearance. When visiting Castle Hill (Glory Park) today, pay attention to the buildings on the left across the street. There was a church on this site until the beginning of the 20th century. This building had a long, about five hundred-year history. In the beginning, there was a Roman Catholic Dominican monastery on this territory. When Luka Sapieha came to power in Chernobyl, the Dominican monastery was rebuilt into a church in the 1570s. The church, as well as the Chernobyl Castle, was destroyed and rebuilt. In 1740, the church burned down. Seventeen years later, the church was rebuilt and consecrated in 1757. The Chernobyl Church existed until the 1930s. The certainty that this image is of the Chernobyl church is given by photographs of the city of Chernobyl taken by a German photographer in 1918 during a trip along the Pripyat River. The photo shows that near the Castle Hill on the right (view from the river) there is a building very similar to the photo of the church. In the photo, the number 1 is the Church, 2 is Zamkova Gora, 3 is St. Elijah's Church. According to some researchers of the history of the city of Chernobyl, the church was the tomb of Luke Sapieha and his wife Sofia. They were buried in caves dug in clay soils under the church. Other family members of the city's owners were also buried under the church. Location: the castle was located at the mouth of the Usha River, at its confluence with Pripyat. 1541 — the castle was built by Prince Frederick Pronsky, when these lands were controlled by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It was destroyed at least twice, in 1473 and 1482. It was restored in the first quarter of the 16th century, as the castle was located near the settlement in a remote area. At the beginning of the 17th century, the castle was reconstructed and turned into a well-fortified and inaccessible fortress. Architecture: Surrounded on the steppe side by a moat two fathoms deep. The area of the castle is 22×17 fathoms. At that time, the territory housed 18 different buildings and two watchtowers. The castle is built of pine logs. Research: The first characteristic of the Chernobyl Castle dates back to 1552. During this period, descriptions of fortifications, including the castle, appeared. In 2005-2008, archaeological excavations were carried out, which revealed a cultural layer of 10-12 centuries preceding the first documentary mention of Chernobyl.
