the old Jewish cemetery. Before the revolution, Chernobyl was a famous Jewish town in the Russian Empire. According to the census of the end of the 19th century, Jews lived here twice as many as Orthodox Christians. Unfortunately, radiation levels in abandoned cemeteries exceed the norm by several dozen times, or even higher. The fact is that the liquidators did not deactivate such specific sites. Many graves have been neglected for a long time, dead trees fall on the fence and crosses are often broken. There's no one to fix it. The most radioactive cemetery in the exclusion zone is the "new cemetery" in the city of Pripyat. The fact is that it is very close to the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. In the first months after the accident at the fourth unit, radiation levels at this site reached 10/20 X-rays. Ancient tombstones have been preserved. There is a unique Jewish tombstone — a stone tree with severed branches, installed over the grave of a man, with whose death the ancient family was interrupted. Some researchers claim that the monument is made of petrified wood. The cemetery is abandoned. Burials are not used. In 1990, Hasidim erected crypts at the burial site of Tzaddiks Menachem and Mordechai of Tver. Inside the tombs are concrete cubes, where believers put notes with requests.

It's a wonderful cemetery. My grandfather has been lying there for 40 years and he likes everything. The neighbors are quiet, calm, the atmosphere is pleasant, we are often visited from there. It's a great place, I recommend it to everyone!
